A judge today expressed horror at an "appalling catalogue of cruelty" inflicted on a six-year old child .Sheffield man, Charles Howard, 45, was convicted today in Sheffield Crown Court of cruelty to his step-son, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Susan Howard, 39, the boy's mother, was cleared of charges of neglect. |
Judge Stephen Arnold told Howard, "You are an evil man who deliberately inflicted pain and suffering on an innocent child who had the misfortune to come into your care," before sentencing him to five years imprisonment. punchedThe court heard how Howard punched and kicked his six-year old step-son when he wet the bed, and held the child's hand over a hot oven ring as a punishment for not eating. |
rowedAnother neighbour, Gordon Sydenham, told out reporter that Howard frequently came home late and rowed with his wife. "We could hear the shouting and screaming all down the road." |
